The Indian Canyons Golf Club in Palm Springs is a landmark example of "Tiki" architecture. Working with Richard Harrison, architect Donald Wexler had designed many school buildings using new approaches to steel construction. Wexler believed that the same methods could be used to build stylish and affordable homes. The Alexander Construction company contracted Wexler to design prefab steel houses for a tract neighborhood in Palm Springs, California. Irwin Miller and his wife Xenia Simons Miller brought Modernism to Indiana with their stunning home the Miller House. After convincing Eliel Saarinen to design a building in Columbus ten years earlier, the Miller’s commissioned Eliel’s son Eero to design a home for them in Columbus, Indiana.

In 1929, architect Richard Neutra built the steel-framed Lovell House. Many other twentieth century architects, from Albert Frey to Charles and Ray Eames, experimented with metal construction. However, these sophisticated houses were expensive custom designs, and they were not made using prefabricated metal parts. However, the Millers were fully aware of the architectural significance of the home. The property received a National Historic Landmark designation in 2000 and was the first building to do so while one of its designers, landscape architect Dan Kiley, was still alive and while the original owners were still living there. When J. Irwin Miller passed away in 2004, Xenia Miller (who died in 2008) had arranged, with the National Trust, that after her passing the house would be turned over to the care and maintenance of the Indiana Museum of Art.

He gained inspiration for the 50-foot rosewood and walnut storage unit in the living room from one that George Nelson built for the Herman Miller Company in 1946. Girard also designed the gate to the pool area, an iron piece with American folk art motifs. The outdoor living space is equally refined, but with design features that accommodate family life.
He understood the power that architecture had on the success of a community and its residents. He was a champion of Cummins’s Architecture Program, which became a formal part of the Cummins Foundation in 1960. The program helped to fund local schools and other public facilities in Bartholomew County with the condition that the architect must be chosen from a list of accomplished modernist architects. As a result, Columbus was transformed into a mecca of modernism, boasting works from Eliel and Eero Saarinen, Harry Weese, Henry Moore, I.M. Pei, and Richard Meier, among others. The Miller House and Garden is one of the country’s most significant examples of modernist design applied to a residential structure and its interior and landscape.
Nonetheless, the plan to re-settle in Richard’ former home is unsuccesful. For himself and his family, Richard Neutra was first able to build a home and place to work, which was finished in 1932, through a loan from the Dutch industrialist Cees van der Leeuw (“VDL”).
