In 1929, architect Richard Neutra built the steel-framed Lovell House. Many other twentieth century architects, from Albert Frey to Charles and Ray Eames, experimented with metal construction. However, these sophisticated houses were expensive custom designs, and they were not made using prefabricated metal parts. However, the Millers were fully aware of the architectural significance of the home. The property received a National Historic Landmark designation in 2000 and was the first building to do so while one of its designers, landscape architect Dan Kiley, was still alive and while the original owners were still living there. When J. Irwin Miller passed away in 2004, Xenia Miller (who died in 2008) had arranged, with the National Trust, that after her passing the house would be turned over to the care and maintenance of the Indiana Museum of Art.

Girard designed much of the interior, including the rugs and textiles. As the Design Director of the Textile Division at Herman Miller Furniture Company, Girard favored a mix of colors and patterns. He understood the power that architecture had on the success of a community and its residents. He was a champion of Cummins’s Architecture Program, which became a formal part of the Cummins Foundation in 1960. As a result, Columbus was transformed into a mecca of modernism, boasting works from Eliel and Eero Saarinen, Harry Weese, Henry Moore, I.M. Pei, and Richard Meier, among others. The Miller House and Garden is one of the country’s most significant examples of modernist design applied to a residential structure and its interior and landscape.

Nonetheless, the plan to re-settle in Richard’ former home is unsuccesful. For himself and his family, Richard Neutra was first able to build a home and place to work, which was finished in 1932, through a loan from the Dutch industrialist Cees van der Leeuw (“VDL”). Neutra experimented here with living technology in a quasi “self-test.” After a devastating fire in 1963, his son Dion oversaw the rebuilding of the house. The house for George and May Kambara was among the last in a colony of nine houses that Richard Neutra built on the shores of Silver Lake.
